European Union Carbon Farming Barometer
The Climate Agriculture Alliance, pioneering the transition toward sustainable agriculture in the European Union, is thrilled to announce the launch of a EU Carbon Farming Barometer.
Announced in 2024, the CAA has partnered with GreenFlex, one of the leaders in sustainability consulting, to work on this Carbon Farming Barometer.
The Carbon Farming Barometer offers insights from both quantitative and qualitative surveys, including responses from industry leaders, government representatives, and project developers. This report covers essential aspects of the agricultural carbon credit market, such as MRV technologies, co-benefits valued by project implementers, and the motivations behind credit purchases.
Through this initiative, the Carbon Agriculture Alliance aims to support informed decision-making and foster a transparent and sustainable carbon credit ecosystem within the agricultural sector.
After the success of the Official launch in Brussels on the 19th of March, the Climate Agriculture Alliance organised a digital release of the EU Carbon Farming Barometer on the 1st of April.

GreenFlex has first had to gather information through an online survey sent to all the members of the Climate Agriculture Alliance in order to understand, among other points :
- The geographical scope of action of members' players (local, national, European, international)
- The type of MRV (Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification) data used by member tool publishers (satellite, declarative, soil analysis)
- The co-benefits valued or taken into account in the projects
- The practices most commonly used in projectsThe motivation(s) of funders to purchase credits
They have then carried out interviews with a panel of CAA members as well as a member of the French Ministry of Ecology (Ministère de la Transition Ecologique) working on the French Label Bas Carbone.
This barometer provides a comprehensive analysis of the current trends, practices, and challenges within the carbon credit market as it applies to agriculture, highlighting the demand for sustainability and the unique challenges that stakeholders face.
